It looks like Dallas is not taking the Winston Wolfe approach to their early season success ("Let's not start ______ing each other's _____s just yet, fellas"... I included the blanks because this is a f*cking family friendly blog!) as the Cowboys started looking at a controversial character to bolster their defense.
All in favor say , "I"
Lincoln, "I"
Ever since Jason Ferguson tore his right bicep in the Giants game, week 1, Dallas has been thin at nose tackle. Remi Ayodele is nice and all, but I don't really want both of the Ayodele brothers sucking on the same defense.
Is signing Tank Johnson risky? No, not at all actually. Risk implies that there is something of value that could be lost, by nabbing the very talented Johnson at this point in his career all Dallas would have to offer would be the minimum salary.
This is a veteran team that has seen it's fair share of guys with baggage and has yet to implode, adding a talented player to a position of need is not a bad thing. If he acts up, brings 12 AK 47's to practice he can simply be released...or maybe given a raise, this is TEXAS after all!
Tank likes guns, that has been his only crime...he's never brandished them at people, he's never used them in a fight, he's never used them in a robbery, he's never used them illegally in any way other than sans a license. Illinois does not have a Conceal Carry Permit available in the state, Tank first got in trouble having a gun, concealed in his truck...which if you ask a pro athlete like say, Antoine Walker, might be a good thing to have... He got probation and then after a sting operation in his house revealed that he had a big collection of arms he was sent to jail for violating probation. Goodell suspended him for half the season, of which Johnson has already served 2 weeks despite not being on an active NFL roster. The Bears released him after they told him to straighten up and fly right but he vehemently disobeyed by getting a speeding ticket!
If he's out of shape, don't sign him. If he's not a good fit for the scheme, don't sign him. If you're really afraid of dropping the 53rd man on the roster for 24 hours, don't sign him. But don't not sign him (double negatives are not, not fun!) because you're afraid of his past, that he'll destroy the room, or that he'll hang out with TO and be a bad influence. If he does anything like that, just cut him. You're not risking anything.
He won't be available until the second half of the season but that's precisely when Dallas will need him most. Jay Ratliff has done an excellent job in the 1 3/4ths games he's played at NT in the Philips 3-4 but he's undersized for the position and has never been a full time starter, as a result he is likely to wear down as the season goes on. Adding a talent like Tank Johnson who can stand up vs the run AND get pressure on the quarterback, even if just used in a part time role, could be the difference in the defense collapsing like last season or getting better as the playoffs near.
He's sure to be on his best behavior at this point in his career.

Not a surprise that the team that signed Terrible Owens would want another idiot of the team. I dont think Mr. AK-47 will solve your problems after his suspension. Don't worry guys Vick will be available in about a year! How bout them REEEEEDSKIIIIIIINS!
