NFL Football Picks

Lincoln here taking some time from sailing my yacht around the Gulf to bring you the picks you so desperately need for this Sunday full of pro football, and pennant race baseball (though no baseball picks) goodness. Lots of home dogs this week which means lots of "fun" to be had since we know that sports betting is illegal in most of the country and these are for entertainment purposes only... the "'s around fun were only to emphasis the non-bettingness not for sarcasm.

Houston @ Atlanta (+2.5)

Seattle @ San Fran (+1)

Pittsburgh @ Arizona (+6)

Green Bay (-1) @ Minny

I know I went against the "picking home underdog" philosophy here but it's only one lousy point. Plus most the public still underrate how good this Packer team is (note SportsBullies predicted them to win the NFC Central at the beginning of the season) and Minny is really bad. Kelley Holcomb will start at QB for them and he has a girl's name.

St Louis (+13) @ Dallas

Now before all the Cow faithful come running after me with pitchforks I'm not predicting a Ram victory, only a Ram cover...big difference. Parody is such in the NFL that virtually no team should be a 2 TD favorite over another. Last I checked, T-New still wasn't 100% Roy Williams is still on the team and if there's one thing that even and injured Marc Bulger/St Louis Ram offensive game attack can do is throw the ball down field. Dallas' secondary looks great against Miami and Rex Grossman but a solid QB with Issac Bruce and Tory Holt will be able to score...if Eli and Plexiglass can the Rams should def score enough to cover...just not to win.

[ 3-1 last week pro ]
[ 3-1 this week NCAA ]
[ 8-4 total pro ]
[ 20-8 total NCAA ]
[ 28-12 all total...for those readers who can't add ]

***** And still no loosing sessions!! *****

knock on wood.

...and did anyone really think that I'd pass up on taking Cal with points???

Berkley Bears (+6.5) @ Oregon

AC Baseball in Texas...?

According to a SportsBullies trusted source inside the Rangers organization, Texas has begun discussions with sponsors and season ticket holders about the possibility of adding a retractable roof to the Ballpark.

Obviously this is far away from actually happening, but if a roof was added to the Temple it would stand as one of the biggest (and first) "fan-friendly" moves by the organization.

It will be interesting to see how adding a retractable roof affect how much the ball carries, it is not going to turn the Baseball Field Formerly Known as Ameriquest into Chavez Ravine but there could be beneficial effect for the play of the field.

Dallas Dominates

So watching football after recording is awesome in the fact that you can skip all the crap you don't need, like commercials, and anything Al Michaels says. But it is impossible to not know the outcome of the game before you watch it. Period. Despite completely ignoring the radio in the car home and walking away from conversations with people talking about the game there's ALWAYS going to be some idiot who just blurts out things (JJ?) even if he knows you have the game TiVoed.

Onto the game though. The highs.... T-O-N-Y R-O-M-O. Dude is my hero. I mean, he makes it look so effortless and he is having a blast. Who wouldn't love this guy?!? I mean, besides whinny ass Skins and Eagles fans. He made at least 4 absolutely jaw dropping, make you want to jump for joy, he must be Harry Houdini plays. Just ask the Bears' efense. (Not a typo. The supposed 'D' they had? Romo made them look foolish.)

Actually the Bears did a decent job but Romo's ability to continually buy more time and make plays that nobody else can reduced a championship caliber D to looking like the Rams.

That's the key though, Romo makes plays that virtually no one else can. How many sacks would the Bears have had if Drew Bledsoe was QB? Maybe that's an extreme example, but Peyton would have gotten the ball off...he never gets sacked not because he's fast but because he's smart...Brady prolly the same thing, Vince Young could run away from the blitzers but he can't see the field like Romo and is no where near as accurate a passer, so who else? Palmer? Maybe Hasselback? I think the Bears would hassle him onto his back a lot (high comedy!), McNabb? Depends on how healthy he is.

The point is Romo has now catapulted him into the stratosphere of elite player in the NFL. It's not just that he's the starting QB for the Dallas Cowboys, it's not because he went to the Pro Bowl last year (which was more indicative of a hot start and weak NFC QB play than anything) it's because he's a special, special talent who's shown the remarkable ability to reach his zenith directly after his nadir.

...Actually I don't think I should say that, I don't think Romo's at his highest point. I'm not going to jinx it and say where that point is but it'll be a fun ride to find out.

Your 2007-08 Dallas Cowboys (we actually have a good QB again!!)

NFL Picks

After the Cal Bears rewarded my loyalty and saved us from our first losing college football weekend, let's take a real quick look at the pros.

Indy (-7) @ H-town

No Andre Johnson means no cover for the surprising Texans

Bolts @ Pack (+6.5)

Wait wait wait...you mean I get Brett Farve at home with points against Norv Turner?!??!

Lions @ Philly (-5.5)

McNabb isn't near as bad as he showed on Monday night and the Lions are a whole lot worse than they've shown this year. Philly D gets in Kitna's face all day, forcing turnovers...Brain Westbrook finally has his mega break out game for my Bad Newz Kennels fantasy team

Rams @ Tampa Bay (-3.5)

There is still a fairly large contingent of people out there who think of the St Louis Rams as a good football team...on Planet Earth, not so much. Tampa is just medicore but an average team should beat a terrible team with awful defense by a touchdown at home.

Quick Link

All my Dallas and Washington area readers will appreciate this! (warning language...don't watch at work...unless you just throw around the f-bomb at your work then have at it)

Saturday Picks

The Canes got us our 10th win, vs only 4 losses, of the young college football season yesterday by demolishing Aggie...good times!

Here is a quick into the future ...

Florida (-23) @ Ole Miss

Long live Tim Tebow!!

Michigan State (-11.5) @ Notre Dame

That's right, a huge Irish fan is picking against the Golden Domers for the second week in a row. I love Notre Dame...but I love money more. Rule #1 of picking games is never follow your heart over your head. If Michigan State can score 12 points they'll cover...this Notre Dame team couldn't score on her.

Georgia @ Crimson Tide (-3.5)

Nick Saban for President!!

Army @ Boston College (-27.5)

A legit top 10 team...even if they're not there in the polls... versus one of the 10 worst programs, at home, with a great offense. This line could be 10 points higher and I'd still think about going with the Fightin' Matt Ryan's!

State College of Pennsylvania @ Michigan (+3)

People have over reacted to the start of Michigan's year...they're not near as good as I thought they were to start the season but give me Mike Hart at home with points.

Zona @ Cal (-14)

I...can't...stop....picking Cal!!!

Sneak Peak

Thursday football really messes up my schedule... I'm going to be busy during the A&M/Miami game but that won't stop me from endorsing The U at home -2.5

Now I must be off, but if you've got some time and love really really bad sports talk radio click here...you will not be disappointed. (I found this after having to go in my WayBack machine to find something positive about Notre Dame football)

However my search also lead me to this....which on the one hand saddens me, but on the other hand makes me happy because it confirms my theory that if you set almost anything to Benny Hill music it will be funny.
He will be greatness!!!

Footbally Good Times!

Very nice win in Miami for Dallas...if only I could have said that more in the 06 NBA Finals, but that is a very different topic, back to less depressing news...The Boys start 2-0 for the first time this millennium! Those pesky Redskins (I said they were going to be good and challenge for a playoff spot but nobody believed me) share the cat-bird seat in the division with the Boys after their thrashing of Philly, who falls to 0-2; which is good as my pure unadulterated hatred for all things Philly (I'm looking at YOU Ben Franklin...think you're so great with your Almanacs and your bifocals! I like my monocles just fine, thank you! Take your pioneering work in politics and electricity and stick them up your circulating stove!) is quenched for another week.

It looks like Dallas is not taking the Winston Wolfe approach to their early season success ("Let's not start ______ing each other's _____s just yet, fellas"... I included the blanks because this is a f*cking family friendly blog!) as the Cowboys started looking at a controversial character to bolster their defense.

All in favor say , "I"

Lincoln, "I"

Ever since Jason Ferguson tore his right bicep in the Giants game, week 1, Dallas has been thin at nose tackle. Remi Ayodele is nice and all, but I don't really want both of the Ayodele brothers sucking on the same defense.

Is signing Tank Johnson risky? No, not at all actually. Risk implies that there is something of value that could be lost, by nabbing the very talented Johnson at this point in his career all Dallas would have to offer would be the minimum salary.

This is a veteran team that has seen it's fair share of guys with baggage and has yet to implode, adding a talented player to a position of need is not a bad thing. If he acts up, brings 12 AK 47's to practice he can simply be released...or maybe given a raise, this is TEXAS after all!

Tank likes guns, that has been his only crime...he's never brandished them at people, he's never used them in a fight, he's never used them in a robbery, he's never used them illegally in any way other than sans a license. Illinois does not have a Conceal Carry Permit available in the state, Tank first got in trouble having a gun, concealed in his truck...which if you ask a pro athlete like say, Antoine Walker, might be a good thing to have... He got probation and then after a sting operation in his house revealed that he had a big collection of arms he was sent to jail for violating probation. Goodell suspended him for half the season, of which Johnson has already served 2 weeks despite not being on an active NFL roster. The Bears released him after they told him to straighten up and fly right but he vehemently disobeyed by getting a speeding ticket!

If he's out of shape, don't sign him. If he's not a good fit for the scheme, don't sign him. If you're really afraid of dropping the 53rd man on the roster for 24 hours, don't sign him. But don't not sign him (double negatives are not, not fun!) because you're afraid of his past, that he'll destroy the room, or that he'll hang out with TO and be a bad influence. If he does anything like that, just cut him. You're not risking anything.

He won't be available until the second half of the season but that's precisely when Dallas will need him most. Jay Ratliff has done an excellent job in the 1 3/4ths games he's played at NT in the Philips 3-4 but he's undersized for the position and has never been a full time starter, as a result he is likely to wear down as the season goes on. Adding a talent like Tank Johnson who can stand up vs the run AND get pressure on the quarterback, even if just used in a part time role, could be the difference in the defense collapsing like last season or getting better as the playoffs near.
He's sure to be on his best behavior at this point in his career.

Catchin Up

Lots of big stories goin on now in the world-o-sports.

That Pats spying story is getting waaaay too much attention, just put microphones in the helmet of the free safety, like the QB, and you won't have to worry about it anymore. Simmons and Aaron Schatz have a good article on it

The Rangers are actually playing good baseball, somewhat making up for the horrible start to the season. I just hope that JD isn't brainwashed into thinking that this team isn't a 32 year old centerfielder and #4 starter away from the playoffs and goes crazy in free agency.

Yesterday we learned that Greg Oden's full name apparently ends with "Sam Bowie", although shouldn't Amare be in there somewhere? This sets him back a year, but the Trailblazers weren't going to be a playoff team this year with him anyway. He can recover from this, the bigger problem may be that he has one leg 3 inches longer than the other and may have chronic back/leg problems...as apposed to every other Trailblazer for the past 10 years who's just has chronic problems. This may actually be a good thing for Portland, who is a good point guard and 3 years away from being really scary, this Odenless squad is now virtually guaranteed a top 5 pick in next years draft. Add Eric Gordon or Derrick Rose and get ready for Mavs/Portland Western Conference championship games for years to come!

After nearly missing a 5-0 college football Saturday (thanks to terrible Nebraska play calling and Cal letting in a meaningless...to the final score...late touch) here are the picks for this week.

Central Michigan @ Purdue (-22) 11:00 AM ESPN 2

Purdue has won it's first two games by a combined score of 104-30. They are now facing the same Central Michigan Chippewa squad that lost their first game 52-7 to Kansas...Kansas!... And not in basketball! The Chippewas...that's just fun to say, so at least they got that goin for em which is nice...currently boast the 107th ranked scoring defense, 112 against the pass. Purdue loves to throw, QB Curtis Painter will put up big numbers...even if the Boilermakers, Boilermakers vs Chippewas is by far the best mascot match up of the year, elect to the run the ball all second half they have two runners averaging over 6 ypc. I love stats! Put in on the board!

Notre Dame @ Michigan (-7.5) 2:30 ABC

The resistible force at the movable object. Two true freshman QBs. Two winless proud schools. This could be the worst game of all time. As a Notre Dame fan, I'd like to think that we could win this one...but the Irish have the worst offense in the country. Jimmy Clausen has all the makings of a future stud but the O-line maybe the worst of all time. -4 rushing yards after 2 games!!! -4! So when looking at the line, Michigan -7.5, the question really is; can Michigan score 8 points? They still have Mike Hart and there was something in the crazy look in his eye when he guaranteed victory that I kind of liked, he'll get two 2 TD himself which will assure the cover...assuming the luck of the Irish doesn't give them a fumble recovery. Charlie Weis v Lloyd Carr may be the biggest coaching mismatch of all time...but ND is that bad right now.

***Side rant: Can't Notre Dame's offensive struggles be seen as a validation of Brady Quinn, a lot was made of the fact that he played in Weis' system and that was why he put up big numbers...I think we can put that argument to bed now. Conversely, LSU is just as good as ever even without JaMarcus Russell...sorry, just a Notre Dame homer trying to salvage something good from this year. Rant over ***

Louisiana Tech @ California (-33) 6:30

The Bears burned me last week but like a battered wife I've convinced myself that it's only because they love me, and that I deserved it...so I'm back for more. 33 is a really big number but Cal's at home, has ridiculously superior talent, and is playing a rush first team who will be down early and often forced to abandon the run and they're offense will completely stall out. DeSean Jackson is my favorite player in college football right now, closely followed by Run DMC and I can't wait for both of them to play for the Cowboys next year.

#1 USC (-10) @ Nebraska 7:00 ABC

Nebraska is banged up on the defensive side of the ball, and while the Trojans are facing an injury bug of their own, the Huskers don't have the 7 star blue chip recruits on their 4th team like USC. Last year Nebraska really played just not to get blown out, losing by 18, they're scared of these guys...as they should be! I think USC might be a little pissed about all the "LSU is the number 1 team in the country" talk and want to show everyone on national TV how good they really are.

#21 Boston College (+7) @ #15 Georgia Tech 7:00 ESPN 2

The battle for the ACC!!...yeah, ok, I'm not that excited either. Georgia Tech's only real offensive weapon is Tashard Choice...which is a good one to have but Boston College has one of the best run defense in the country and a legit star at QB in Matt Ryan.

Football Rundown

Big weekend for all male U.S. Americans twas the start of football full time. SportsBullies is here to break down all that happened in the world of pig skin...starting on campus.

Texas A&M had their hands full with a feisty Fresno State team. Very thrilling triple overtime game that had us here at Sports Bullies puzzled a bit. In fairness, we only started watching at the end of regulation. Apparently in Aggieland, refs are allowed to make 14 different ruling after a play has been reviewed. This cluster fuck started when the Fresno State receiver tippy-toed down the sideline towards the end zone, only to fumble near the goal line. The receiver was originally ruled out of bounds at the Aggie 1, which would have let Fresno punch it in for the game winning OT score. The call was absurd, the runner was clearly in bounds...it was either a touchdown or touchback. The play was reviewed, the ruling was upheld...then overturned...then roughing the passer was called (correctly but the flag thrown during the play must have been invisible), then it was announced that the original ruling would be upheld but Fresno took control the ball at the 12 after a 10 minute argument on the sidelines from both coaches. One of the best parts of having a big screen tv is being able to read lips, Fresno State head coach Pat Hill's mustacheoed lips were very easy to read with "bullshit" being uttered about 34,000 times in 5 minutes. Apparantly Hill ended up feeling bad for A&M and just ran right up the middle for no gain 3 times, kicked and set up another OT. Coach Frans' genious give the ball to Javorski Lane strategy worked out, somewhat surprisingly as the 300 lb running back didn't pass out during the course of the game (unlike the goal line camera operator who's heat stroke left that crucial angle unavailable for review on the game-altering fumble play)

Side rant: When will A&M stop home scheduling day games to start the season? Texas summer lasts into September. A school built on loyal student support repays their students by forcing them to stand in 110 degree heat for 4 hours. College Station in the middle of a barren desert wasteland and third deck at Kyle Field is located 3 feet from the surface of the sun. Tradition/peer pressure forces 100's of kids each year to get heat related illness.

Lloyd Carr era officially ended on Saturday. The Ducks of Oregon, who weren't sporting the crazy neon unis, handily defeated the Wolverines with the exact same offensive scheme (spread option) as Appy State. Carr's inability to recognize and correct this ultimately cost him his job, not Michigan's horrendous defense. (That didn't help either.) At the beginning of the game a lot was made of Michigan seniors Henne, Hart, and Long collectively deciding to return for their senior year... maybe they should have invited some of the defensive guys into that meeting. Henne and Hart were both banged up in the game, making their decision look worse. Pretty sure that a high school team could beat Michigan right now if they ran the spread option. Lots of crowd shots for hot Michigan girls looking very dejected.

Not so for the hot Sooner chicks, Oklahoma looks like a juggernaut. We were a little skeptical with thier 78 point explosion against the mighty Mean Green. Consider us believers after they hung half a hundred on the Hurricanes. Randy Shannon maybe a great defensive mind and leader of men, but whoever is calling their offensive plays did about the worst job I've ever seen. Anyone on Earth with more than 50 hours of Madden/NCAA Football experience could have coached circles around him.

Texas decided to come out of its coma in the second half and actually play TCU, exploding for 24 points in the 4th quarter.

Auburn was shocked by the fighting Anthony Henry's.

Penn State roughed up the Golden Domers in a match up of Sports Bullies authors random beloved teams. Lincoln called to scoreboard JJ just prior to Penn State running back the punt for their first score. Joe Pa looked completely lost from the opening kick to the last. At one point after State called a timeout, he turned to Dan Conner and said, "Ham, cut your hair you damn hippie." They don't even give the guy a headset anymore, he's just some nice old man who has a really good seat for the game. A final note about Joe, Lincoln recently watched a ESPN Classic of the 1990 Penn State- Notre Dame game. His observation from a game that featured Rick Mirer and the Rocket, the one thing that stood out was how incredibly old Joe Pa looked 20 years ago...matched only by the human tea kettle, Lou Holtz.

And finally, LSU cemented its status as the legit number one, after demolishing Va Tech. And of note here, Lincoln was very happy the Bayou Bengals covered in his "Big-Daddy-Double-up-Stone-Cold-John-Lock of the week."

Onto the boys who are payed to play...legally at least.

Favre tied Elway, which is spanish for 'the way', for most career wins. While Green Bay's offense didn't score a TD, Favre made it look like it was the mid 90's with several highlight reel plays. Great win for the Pack and an even better win for the Cowboys. As the old saying goes, "The enemy of my enemy is my friend." Dun dun da tadun dun Go Pack Go!!

Also reverting to late 90's form was Randy "I actually care now" Moss. Huge day in his Pats debut.

Big Ben didn't lose any internal organs this summer and it showed today. His 4 TD performance is the only thing keeping Lincoln's fantasy team, The Bad Newz Kennels, in the mix.

Unfortunately, Lincoln is playing the owner of "Touchdown" Tony Romo.

2007 NFL Season Picks

The Colts v Saints game today means that by law everyone in the world must post their NFL preview column today. And so in accordance with state and federal laws here are the SportsBullies picks for the upcoming football year.

Playoffs

NFC East : Philly -- It really pains me to write this, and I know JJ/KC will disagree but that Eagle Defense still scares me, Brian Westbrook is a monster (Note of full disclosure I have him in my fantasy league so he better be good!), and McNabb has to stay healthy one of these years...doesn't he? If not Philly Back up QB de Jour...someone other than the incredibly awful Kevin Kolb... will play very well in his stead.

NFC Norris : Chicago -- As much as I hate giving Philly credit I hate resting my credibility on a team led by Rex Grossman...or any Florida QB, sorry Tim Tebow...but the presence of Brian Urlacher/Tommie Harris/Nathan Vasher and one more year of Lance Briggs...assuming he stays lucid enough to call his friends to pick him up after he destroys 6 figure foreign sports cars...alleviates most of my concerns. Really if Grossman wasn't the QB they'd be unanimous Super Bowl picks, quick somebody get a burger and follow Drew Bledsoe to Chicago...Championship!

Note: I'm really proud of myself for making it through a paragraph talking about the Bears and not make any SNL Super Fans references

Wait...scratch that! I just can't do it...it's Rex Freaking Grossman!! Their O-Line is old and they traded away their best offensive weapon and replaced him with a guy who names Ricky Williams as his personal idol.

NFC North : Green Bay -- They were almost a playoff team last year they offense won't be great but at least Favre will still win you a couple games in addition to throwing a couple away. Their defense is going to be pretty flippin good. Aaron Kampman maybe the best defensive player no one knows about, their corners are really good, AJ Hawk is a man-beast, I believe in Brandon Jackson...at least a lot more than I believe in Gross-man.

NFC South : Carolina -- I am going to keep picking this damn team until they bail me out (Super Bowl pick last year) Hopefully Jake Delhomme will revert back to his old form and they will actually hand the ball off to DeAngelo Williams instead of DeShaun Foster. If those two things happen this is team is a legit contender...if not they is the possibility of David Carr being resurrected by a team with a decent offensive line and then maybe someone will hypnotize Foster into thinking he's back at UCLA again. Either way 9 wins should take this division and the Panthers have the easiest schedule.

NFC West : Seattle -- I'm tempted to pick the 9ers here, but I think they're still a year or two away and they have the whole "everyone and their mom is picking them" thing going for them and we all know how well that works out (see: Cardinals, Arizona 2006) I trust the human walrus and Hasslebeck more than a Norv Turner-less Alex Smith.

Wild Cards : Chicago -- As bad as Grossman is their D still rocks and their division sucks to they'll get 4 wins just playing Minny and Detroit.

and

Dallas -- We will, of course, have lots more Cowboy coverage as the season goes on. I just want to say this...temper, tap those breaks Cowboy fans. I'm a huge Romo fan and have as much faith in him as anyone (which is why I see Dallas as a playoff team), the O-line has a chance to be really good, I think TO and Glenn each have at least one more good year left in them, Wade Phillips should help the defense get more pressure on the QB, DeMarcus Ware - who had more hurries than any linebacker in the league - will have a monster season ... Monster = 15+ sacks. BUT! with all that said, Newman's injury scares the ever living out of me. If Jason Ferguson goes down we're left with Jay Ratliff at NT? As great of a defensive mind as Phillips is Roy Williams still can't cover, Seahawks fans will tell you Ken Hamlin can't either, Ware is the best cover linebacker outside of Kevin Burnet who's always hurt. Football is a game with a tremendous about of variation from year to year, with only 16 games, one or two slip ups, funny bounces, key injuries and your fans are talking about the Draft at Christmas, not the playoffs.

The Cowboys are a very talented team, but just chill...nothing in the NFL is preordained.

AFC East : New England -- losing Seymour and Harrison really hurt that defense but they'll be back halfway through the season and Brady/Belichick are able to get this team to the playoffs by themselves.

AFC North : Pittsburgh -- All systems go for a bounce back year. Big Ben Rothelisburger is the uber talented player who lead his team to the Super Bowl a couple years ago and not the in and out of intensive care player who was rushed back waaaaaaay too soon last year. Healthy Ben + great defense equals January football in the steel city.

AFC South : Indy -- no explanation needed.

AFC West : San Diego -- Ability to run the ball, ability to get pressure on opposing QBs, young talented QB, Superstar players on both sides of the ball, Josh Lewin actually announcing meaningful games halfway through a season the Chargers have it all! I'm not so sure that Norv Turner from Martyball is a pretty lateral move, but this team has so much talent.

Wildcards: Denver -- Love the coach, really like the QB, very easy schedule, barn none the best duo of corners in the league. Plus I could rush for like 900 yards and 6 TDs with them.

Jacksonville -- This could be the best defense in the league, they were my mega-sleeper before Jack Del Rio decided to run Leftwich out of town, maybe I'm not giving Garrad enough credit but I think this move cost them a couple wins. However, they can run the ball and stop the run as well, if not better, than anyone in the league.

Super Bowl : New England over San Diego -- The AFC Championship game will be moved back threw weeks and renamed "Super Bowl" this year. Whoever comes out of the NFC has very little chance.

************************

I love the Saints but they really over preformed last year, the offense will still be awesome but that D is atrocious. They're really going to come back to the pack this year. 7-9/8-8.

Atlanta will be better off without Vick, on and off the football field.

Washington is a .500 team.

St Louis will be terrible.

KC is already trying to figure out how to spend the first pick.

Oakland will be better, if only because they can't get any worse.

Paul Posluszny wins Defensive Rookie of the Year

Calvin Johnson wins Offensive RoY

Champ Baliey Defensive PoY

Peyton Manning MVP

*****************************

Week 1

Houston (-3) at Kansas City

Pittsburgh (-5.5) at Cleveland

New England at New York Jets (+6.5)

Texas Terror

This is waaaay off topic but I found this story and just had to share it with you. I'm off to Cuero, Texas.

College Football

We're beginning that magical time of year again when drinking at 8 am in public is perfectly acceptable...college football season has begun. Today marks the first full Saturday of games and as such we here at SportsBullies thought we would provide our valuable public service once again make a couple of predictions.

The level of consistency from top team to top team is fairly strong in college football as perennially top programs have the recruiting power to plug in future All-Americans into their lineup to replace the players they lost to the NFL and graduation (a seemingly rarer event.)

However I prefer to see a team play a couple of times before putting any of my money on the line ... if such a thing were legal, that is strictly a figure of speech ... just so I have a somewhat better feeling of how the team is going to play this year. But that doesn't mean we can't let y'all look into our glass ball a little and see the future of a couple games.

Missouri (-4) vs Illinois (at St Louis) 4:30 pm ESPN2

Ron Zook can recruit...but he can't coach that well. All those talented youngsters for the Illini won't do them enough good as few QBs on earth know their offensive system as well as Mizzu junior Chase Daniel. Missouri will win this one easily...which translates to "by more than 4 points."

19 Florida State (-3.5) vs Clemson Monday 9 pm ESPN

Labor is usually held for FSU/Miami but the Canes recent slide proved to be the impetus for placing the Bowden Bowl in this spot. FSU QB Drew Weatherford sucks slightly less than he showed last year, the removal of nepotism from play calling duties should help as new offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher has implemented more of a pro-style offense... replacing their old 3 and out offensive system. Florida State may not quite be the team that was in the top 5 for 792 straight years but unless Tommy can get McNabb, Marvin Harrison, and Jim Brown all to come back to a crappy east coast orange colored school Papa's going to take this one easily.... and we know all know that "easily" means.

UPSET PICK!!!!

Appalachian State vs 5 Michigan (-27.5) 11 am

Now I really like Michigan this year but they lost a ton on defense and will be facing a dynamic FAST offense. Appy State is the two time defending I-AA champs...they're no slouch. Honestly I wouldn't say a damn thing about this game if I didn't see ASU play a couple games in the playoffs last year, but they really impressed me. They prolly can't stop Henne/Hart but they'll put up some points on a regrouping Maze and Blue defense that may very well look past them. Michigan should definitely win but Appalachian State will fight for 60 minutes and cover.
