2007 NFL Mock Draft UPDATE!

Here is an update of the 2007 Mock Draft including the Vikings signing of Mike Doss. The mock will be continually updated until the draft.

1. Oakland Raiders- QB JaMarcus Russell (LSU) 6-5 260
This big armed QB is a perfect fit for the down field passing offence favored by Al Davis. The Raiders have a lot of holes but after passing on two potential franchise QB’s last year I can’t see them doing it again this year. Another possible choice here is Calvin Johnson, although in order for that to be the pick they would have to move Randy Moss or Joey Porter or both.

2. Detroit Lions- WR Calvin Johnson (Georgia Tech) 6-4 235
Now before you go crazy and think the Lions are going to take another WR hear me out. I don’t think the Lions are going to stay at this pick but I do think Calvin Johnson will be picked here. I think either the Bucs or the Falcons, (who have the ammunition and have put their faith in Michael Vick) will move up to get him. If the Lions keep the pick they will probably go with Joe Thomas.

3. Cleveland Browns- QB Brady Quinn (Notre Dame) 6-4 230
After his stock took a huge hit early in the off-season, he has volted back up to the top 5 with a very impressive pro-day. The Browns could really use a franchise QB and Quinn would have some great weapons in Braylon Edwards and Kellen “Im a fucking soldier” Winslow II. Judging by the Browns recent history Quinn will get hurt in an unfortunate motorcycle accident and miss a lot of the season. Adrian Peterson would also be a good choice here.

4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- DE Gaines Adams (Clemson) 6-5 265
With an aging Simeon Rice the Bucs go for the best pass rusher in the draft. I think Adams would go here even if the Lions moved down to this spot and the Bucs move up to number 2.

5. Arizona Cardinals- OT Joe Thomas (Wisconsin) 6-8 315
Joe Thomas is who the Cardinals think he is and that is the best offensive line prospect in the draft and if he falls down to #5 the Cardinals will jump all over him. He could very well go earlier, as high as #2 but the way that things are shaking out there is a good chance he’ll fall down to here. Alan Branch and Amobi Okoye are possibilities here as well.

6. Washington Redskins- DT Amobi Okoye (Louisville) 6-1 300
The Redskins were historically bad at rushing the passer last year setting a record for the least sacks in NFL history. Defensive line is the obvious choice here and Okoye is a stud DT who can collapse the pocket and stay strong against the run. The obvious choice is hardly ever what the Redskins go for and there have been rumors surrounding this pick for months. At times I wish I was the Redskins GM so I could trade down with this pick and make up for all the pick we traded away such as the wonderful Duckett trade. However the Redskins have other plans such as trading down and acquiring Lance Briggs a linebacker who while talented, really is not a need on this team. This trade appears dead for now but that all might change before draft day. With this deal on hold for now you are sure to hear many more rumors surrounding this pick. There are also rumors that the Redskins are looking to trade up into the #2 pick to acquire Calvin Johnson, while I love Johnson I hope this rumor is false. Other possibilities if the Redskins keep this pick are Jamaal Anderson and Laron Landry.

7. Minnesota Vikings- DE Jamaal Anderson (Arkansas) 6-6 280
This is a tough one as the Vikings are in need of a pass rush but have spent a first round pick on Udeze. I originally had them taking Laron Landry but with the signing of Mike Doss that seems unlikely. I took another look at Udeze’s stats and the Viking could easily consider him a bust and cut their losses. Jamal Anderson is a complete DE who can play well against both the run and the pass. He is a good pick here.

8. Atlanta Falcons- S Laron Landry (LSU) 6-2 205
The Falcons may get lucky and have the best safety in the draft fall into their laps. Adding Landry to a secondary that includes Deangelo Hall and Jimmy Williams would make them scary good. Look for the Redskins to blow a lot of smoke about taking Landry to force the Falcons to trade up and get him.

9. Miami Dolphins- DT Alan Branch (Michigan) 6-6 330
Alan Branch might not fall this far but his stock is slipping after many scouts report him to be out of shape. He has a massive frame and remarkable quickness for a guy this big. I think he will be a star in this league wherever he goes. The Dolphins could go a number of directions with this pick and I also see them going Leon Hall.

10. Houston Texans- RB Adrian Peterson (Oklahoma) 6-2 220
The Texans passed on rookie sensation Reggie Bush and Rookie of the Year and hometown favorite Vince Young last year and I don’t think they will make the same mistake. They do have Ahman Green but he can’t be relied upon for a full healthy year. Other possibilities are OT Levi Brown and CB Leon Hall.

11. San Francisco 49ers- MLB Patrick Willis (Old Miss) 6-2 240
The 49ers have addressed a lot of their needs in free agency but they still could use some help on the defense. I originally had them taking a defensive lineman here but with the changes to the mock Patrick Willis has fallen to them. This talented LB could play really well as an ILB in a 3-4 scheme. He ran a blazing 4.37 40 yard dash and would be a great addition to the 49ers.

12. Buffalo Bills- RB Marshawn Lynch (Cal) 5-10 223
The Bills in my opinion did not have a good off-season. They lost a good corner, linebacker, and running back. Then they went and overpaid for a mediocre player like Derrick Dockery. If Patrick Willis falls to this position they will probably go with him but as it stands now Lynch could be their pick. Some mocks have him falling out of the first round but I think he would be a good pick to take over for the departed Willis McNoknee.


13. St. Louis Rams- CB Leon Hall (Michigan) 5-11 195
Most mocks have the Rams taking Alan Branch here and if he falls to #13 then that might be there pick. However with him gone the Rams go after the best CB in the draft. Hall has put on some good numbers at the combine and Michigan pro-day which has his stock rising after it took a big hit from an awful bowl game against Dewayne Jarrett and USC.

14. Carolina Panthers- TE Greg Olson (The U) 6-5 255
Many might consider this talented tight end from the U a bit of a reach here. I think it is very possible and fills a big need for the Panthers. Olson’s has great speed for a tightend and good hands. He will take pressure off Steve Smith and open up the middle of the field to the Panther’s offence.

15. Pittsburg Steelers- Adam Carriker (Nebraska) 6-5 290
Carriker is a versatile defender who can play inside or end in a 4-3 or end in a 3-4 so whichever defense the Steelers chose he would be a good fit. The Steelers could also take a CB with this pick or a linebacker like Lawrence Timmons if Carriker is off the board.

16. Green Bay Packers- Robert Meachem (Tennessee) 6-3 210
The Packer’s seem hot on Greg Olson and if he makes it past the Panthers he will be the pick here (unless Peterson falls this far). Meachem has great size and speed and has had a strong offseason. The Packer’s are yet to make the trade for Randy Moss so they acquire a big target in Meachem for Brett Farve to throw to. They will address their running back needs in the later rounds.

17. Jacksonville Jaguars- S Reggie Nelson (Florida) 6-1 193
Nelson could provide a big boost to the Jaguars secondary and is one of the most versatile players in the draft. He has the athleticism to play both corner and safety.

18. Cincinnati Bangles- LB Lawrence Timmons (Florida St.) 6-3 230
The Cincinnati Bangles like to draft young linebackers who end up suspended by the league for various reasons so they need to draft another one who can hopefully stay out of jail for a few seasons. This is a tall task for any Bangles player but Timmons does have talent and would be a good pickup here.

19. Tennessee Titans- CB Darrelle Revis (Pittsburg) 5-10 190
The Titans go with CB here as insurance in case Rain Man Jones is suspended by the league or thrown in jail. Revis is a talented corner who can also fulfill the Rain man’s role as punt returner. Ginn Jr. is a possibility here with the ability to return punts and be a great weapon for Vince Young.

20. NY Giants- LB Paul Poslusny (Penn State) 6-3 238
I was going to have the Cowboys take this slow linebacker with this pick but then I remembered that Parcells is no longer there. All jokes aside I think this is a good pick for the Giants. Poslusny is an old school linebacker whose stock has dropped in recent months. He was as productive as they come at linebacker U and should be a pretty solid to good pro.

21. Denver Broncos- DE Jarvis Moss- (Florida) 6-5 255
The top priority for Denver in the draft will be to upgrade their pass rush. They have shown interest in possibly trading up into the top 10 to acquire one of the top DE’s. If they stay at 21 and Moss is still available they will jump all over this talented pass rusher. He needs to add a bit of bulk but that seems possible since he is 6-5. Ted Ginn Jr. is another possibility here as well.

22. Dallas Cowboys- CB Chris Houston (Arkansas) 5-11 185
As much as I hate to say it the Cowboys did a nice job of filling their offensive line needs (Leonard Davis) and their need at safety (Ken Hamlin). I look for the Cowboys to upgrade their secondary and Houston has a good name for someone who will play in Texas. Houston played real well against top WR’s this year, slowing down Jarrett, Bowe, and Meachem. We’ll see how he does against Santana Moss and possibly Calvin Johnson if the ‘Skins do something stupid.

23. Kansas City Chiefs- WR Dewayne Jarrett (USC) 6-5 210
He might be a bit slow (4.6 40) but you can’t argue with Jarrett’s production at USC. The Chiefs could also go offensive line or CB with this pick.

24. New England Patriots- S Brandon Meriweather (The U) 5-11 195
With the first of their two first round picks the Patriots take the talented safety from the U. He will provide a much needed boost to their secondary. Michael Griffin is an option here but I think Meriweather is higher on the Pats board.

25. NY Jets- CB Aaron Ross (Texas) 6-1 192
The Jets were one of the biggest surprises of the 2006 season and to spite a good year they have a lot of holes, especially in the secondary. The physical Ross would be a great fit and probably start from day 1 in the Jets secondary.

26. Philadelphia Eagles- S Michael Griffin (Texas) 6-0 205
The Eagles could use a playmaker to pair with Pro-Bowl safety Brian Dawkins. Griffin is a good safety who can fill the space left by the departure of Michael Lewis. LB would have been an option here but the Eagles filled that need by acquiring Takeo Spikes in a trade. WR could be an option here as well.

27. New Orleans Saints- CB Marcus McCauley (Fresno St.) 6-1 205
The Saints had an incredible year last season but badly need to replace Fred Thomas. Watching him try to cover was just sad at times. McCauley is an incredibly physically gifted corner but he regressed his senior year. With some work he could become a good corner in this league. Hey Lincoln would be an upgrade over “TOAST of New Orleans”, he could fall over and not cover just as well. Hey maybe he could get a few pass deflections.

28. New England Patriots- DE/LB Lamarr Woodley (Michigan) 6-2 270
Woodley is a great fit for the Patriots 3-4 system and will help the Pats upgrade an aging LB corps. Considered by some to be too small to play football, Woodley has shown the ability to get to the QB and should be an impact rookie.

29. Baltimore Ravens- OT Joe Staley (Central Michigan) 6-5 302
The Ravens really need to acquire an OT in the draft after losing Tony Pashos in free agency and with an aging Jonathan Ogden on the other side. Staley has shot up many draft boards with amazing workout numbers. The Ravens could also go with OT/OG Justin Blalock here as he would fit very nicely with their physical style of offensive play.

30. San Diego Chargers- WR Tedd Ginn Jr. (Ohio St.) 6-0 180
The Chargers could use some help at WR and Ginn Jr. is an explosive player who could also help in special teams. There are several other receivers the Chargers could go with here. Ginn Jr. has not yet worked out due to an injury he suffered in the national championship game. He will work out later in April and if he has a good day he could shoot up the draft boards of many teams.

31. Chicago Bears- OG/OT Justin Blalock (Texas) 6-4 340
Blalock is a versatile lineman whose physical style could help the Bears running game. If the Lance Briggs trade goes down look for the Bears to draft Amobi Okoye since one of there DT’s is coming back from an injury and the other is in jail.

32. Indianapolis Colts- DT Tank Tyler (NC State) 6-2 305
Despite winning a super bowl the Colts still don’t have a very good defense. The D played well in the post season but it doesn’t diminish the fact that they could use some help on the D-line. Tank Tyler is freakishly strong and would be a good fit for the Colts.
